Stem Cell Research Breakthrough

Praise the Lord!!!! There has been a breakthrough in stem cell research. Scientists in Japan and scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have reported that they have turned human skin cells into cells that appear to have the same ability as embryonic cells to produce the 220 cell types found in the human body -- heart, brain, bone, blood etc, etc. The discovery involved adding four genes to human skin cells. By adding these genes, they were able to reprogram the chromosomes of the skin cells and turn them into blank slates that act like embryonic stem cells. These cells are promising and will not have the draw backs of embryonic stem cells:

  1. When you extract cells from an embryo, you kill the embryo, a living child, albeit, a small living child.
  2. Adult skin cells have had the influence of chemical and electrical stimulation from other cells in the body, something embryonic cells lack. Therefore, adult stem cells have been programed by proximity to other cells and will not produce the tumors and extra tissue that embryonic stem cells produce because they lack that programming.

Prior to this discovery, embryonic stem cells had to be harvested from human embryos. The process destroyed the embryo. Now it will no longer be necessary to destroy human embryos in order to get omnipotent stem cells -- cells that can produce every type of body cell. This is a marvelous discovery.

This is a discovery that is worthy of much praise. Hopefully this discovery and future research will eliminate the need to destroy human life in a vain attempt to make embryonic stem cells work.

The Minneapolis StarTribune reported on this breakthrough the day before Thanksgiving.

Praise the Lord and Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Meet the Candidate: John McCain

Meet John McCain:

Government Spending, Lower Taxes and Economic Prosperity America's economic progress requires that the federal government abide by the same standards of common sense and fiscal restraint as hardworking families.

Read More Straight Talk on Health System Reform
John McCain is willing to address the fundamental problem: the rapidly rising cost of U.S. health care. Bringing costs under control is the only way to stop the erosion of affordable health insurance, save Medicare and Medicaid, protect private health benefits for retirees, and allow our companies to effectively compete around the world.

Read More Human Dignity & the Sanctity of Life
During more than five years as a POW in Vietnam, John McCain experienced the worst assaults on human dignity imaginable. Yet each day he also saw in his fellow prisoners the power of human compassion and the will to prevail against unimaginable evil. It is this experience, and a life dedicated to public service, that has imbued in John McCain a fundamental commitment to the protection of human dignity that will shape his presidency.

John McCain believes that a government "of the people, by the people, and for the people" must remain ever faithful to that noble charge. America needs leadership devoted to the public interest, not the special interest, and a government that fulfills its duties with unfailing integrity, accountability, and common sense. Those who serve in positions of public trust have a patriotic duty to serve the national interest with integrity and accountability, to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the people we are privileged to serve, and to devote ourselves to America's agenda, not that of narrow special interests.

John McCain believes that we must not fail in Iraq. Succeeding in the cause of helping the Iraqi people build a stable, secure, representative state is essential to achieving an enduring peace in a region of the world central to American prosperity and national security. Failure in Iraq will endanger America for generations to come. America has a vital interest in a secure, democratic Iraq, at peace with its neighbors, to help stabilize a dangerous and critical region.

I have always believed that our border must be secure and that the federal government has utterly failed in its responsibility to ensure that it is secure. If we have learned anything from the recent immigration debate, it is that Americans have little trust that their government will honor a pledge to do the things necessary to make the border secure.

America owes its liberty, its prosperity, and its future to our veterans who have dedicated their lives to protecting our great country. John McCain has fought to honor our national commitment to our veterans who have given their careers and livelihoods to ensuring our freedom. He believes we must provide for service members and their families while they serve, we must help those who return from combat to adjust to civilian life, and we must honor and never forget the service of those who do not return.

The most sacred responsibility vested in a president - the commander in chief - is to "preserve and protect" American citizens. John McCain has the necessary vision and unrivaled experience to command the United States armed forces and adapt our nation's defenses to the demands of a changing and dangerous world.

Read More Stewards of Our Nation's Rich Natural Heritage
John McCain has a proud record of common sense stewardship. Along with his commitment to clean air and water, and to conserving open space, he has been a leader on the issue of global warming with the courage to call the nation to action on an issue we can no longer afford to ignore.

Read More Protecting Second Amendment Rights
John McCain believes that the right of law abiding citizens to keep and bear arms is a fundamental, individual Constitutional right that we have a sacred duty to protect. We have a responsibility to ensure that criminals who violate the law are prosecuted to the fullest, rather than restricting the rights of law abiding citizens. Gun control is a proven failure in fighting crime. Law abiding citizens should not be asked to give up their rights because of criminals - criminals who ignore gun control laws anyway.

Prayer Changes Things/God Sends Rain

God seems to be waiting for us to acknowledge His sovereignty and His willingness to answer prayer. As SW Radio Church has always said, "God is still on the Throne and prayer changes things." God, our loving problem solver, and source of all blessing, is just waiting to hear from each one of us. Below is an account of answered prayer which was found on Intercessors for America's Friday Watch.

"GEORGIANS PRAY FOR RAIN; GOD ANSWERS [Praise the Lord]
Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue and hundreds of citizens cried out to God for rain on the steps of the state Capitol Tuesday, "Father, forgive us and lead us to honor you as you honor us with the showers of blessing," the governor prayed. "Thank you, Lord, for the showers that come." Georgians and their Governor, Sonny Purdue, lifted up prayers for rain at the State Capital in Atlanta this past Tuesday. Thankfully, the forecast changed in less than 24 hours and the rain came Wednesday evening. "This is hopefully the beginning of more," Perdue said. "One rain won't refill the reservoirs. It is great affirmation of what we asked for." Perdue was also joined by Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle in appealing to the heavens for rain. "This isn't the first day he's been on his knees in prayer for rain," Cagle said of Perdue. "This is not a ceremony. It's an action of calling the entire state to pray." "We've come together here simply for one reason and one reason only: To very reverently and respectfully pray up a storm," Perdue said when he approached the podium after worship had quieted down. "It's time to appeal to Him who can and will make a difference," Perdue said. Lawmakers and ministers joined the governor for the morning prayer vigil.

The Georgian governor is not the first governor to hold a call for public prayer during the drought stripping the Southeast. Alabama Governor Bob Riley issued a proclamation declaring a week in July as "Days of Prayer for Rain" to "humbly ask for His blessings and to hold us steady in times of difficulty."(CBN News, Christianity Today) WATCH VIDEO OF PRAYER "

Keep praying and Shalom~~~

Please continue to pray against the Hate Crimes bill. The government should not grant special rights based on gender identity, sexual orientation, or "perceived" gender identity. This bill has far reaching ramifications for the family, school curriculum, employment, and religious freedom.

Don't Divide Jerusalem: Immediate Prayer Needed

In less than ten days, there will be meetings in Annapolis between the Palestinians and Israelis about the future of the land in Israel. In Scripture God makes it clear that dividing the land of Israel is an offense to Him and that He will bring His judgment on those who have divided the land. That is why I have repeatedly asked for prayer for Israel and prayer that the United States abandon the Road Map to Peace which divides the land in Israel. We cannot afford to be purpetrators of the division of the land. God says He will bless those who bless Israel and curse those that curse Israel. If we are a party to dividing the land, the impending judgment will certainly have a profound effect on our families.

PRAY that Israel will not be divided any further and that the United States will not be guilty of aiding and abetting its division.

Intercessors for America gives good background information below.
"But which of them has stood in the council of the LORD to see or to hear his word? Who has listened and heard his word? See, the storm of the LORD will burst out in wrath, a whirlwind swirling down on the heads of the wicked. The anger of the LORD will not turn back until he fully accomplishes the purposes of his heart. In days to come you will understand it clearly.- Jeremiah 23:18-20

ANNAPOLIS MEETING SURROUNDED BY FEARS AND DANGERS
With less than ten days and counting till the planned gathering in Annapolis, invitations have yet to be sent, not a jot of the planned "joint declaration" has been written, and various parties are hinting that they may not show up if invited. It turns out that Israeli and Palestinian leaders are too weak to deliver concessions, and concessions are what the Americans require. It would appear that this [meeting], which initially had the support of the Israelis and Palestinians, is beginning to unravel, as both begin to perceive potential traps from which neither may be able to escape. (Israel Insider, 11/16/07) [Praise the Lord (my comment)]

Intercede for spiritual statesmen and for adherence to biblical revelation and principles in the formulation and execution of foreign policy, especially toward Israel and Jerusalem.

Intercede for the revelation of Jesus as Messiah in the Middle East and for "the peace of Jerusalem." (Ps 122)

Pray for spiritual statesman: Ask the Lord to give wisdom from above, that He would intervene as necessary to thwart the will of man and the will of Satan.

Intercede as the Lord leads regarding the interplay of the following religious systems around the projected Annapolis summit: The princes of Persia and Greece, Baal and Asherah, Ahab and Jezebel, idolatry, perversion and false gods, pride and political power (Job 41:1-3), mammon and greed (Luke 16:13), spirits of antichrist (1 John 4:2-4), confusion and madness.

"And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."- Matthew 16:17-19 (KJV)

"I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes,. . .Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God." - Ezekiel 36:27,28 (NKJ)

ISRAELI LAWMAKERS MAKE IT TOUGHER TO DIVIDE JERUSALEM [Praise the Lord]
A law that will make it more difficult for the Israeli government to divide the city of Jerusalem passed a preliminary reading by a large majority in the Israeli Knesset on Wednesday (11/14/07). Israel's Basic Law states that Jerusalem is Israel's capital, and any changes to the city's boundaries must be approved by a majority in the Knesset. Wednesday's proposed law would require 80 of the 120 Knesset members to approve any changes to the boundaries instead of the current 61. (CNSNews.com, 11/14/07)
" . . .This is what the LORD Almighty says:'I am very jealous for Jerusalem and Zion . . ."- Zechariah 1:14b

WATCH OVER JERUSALEM:COALITION FORMS TO BLOCK SPLIT OF JERUSALEM [PTL]
Likud party chairman Binyamin Netanyahu joined Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski, numerous legislators and hundreds of other activists Wednesday at the City of David (located on the southeastern hill below the walled city of Jerusalem) to form a new coalition for Jerusalem with the slogan painted in blue on a huge white banner, "Watch Over Jerusalem." Those who came to fight Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's plan to split Jerusalem with the Palestinian Authority (PA) were addressed by speakers calling for Israelis to unite to block the Prime Minister from carrying out his plan, which he intends to discuss at the upcoming Middle East summit in Annapolis. Liberty Council's email on the ENDA Vote in the House

I have published many blogs about the ENDA bill which recently passed in the House as was expected. Because of the Chrisitan Right's work it, passed by a narrower margin than expected. Many bills in the past have passed with a 2 to 1 margin. ENDA now goes to the Senate where it will probably also pass. Fortunately, we have President Bush's word that he will veto the bill.

We must, however, continue to Pray and Take Action.

Below is the Liberty Council's email regarding their ENDA campaign:

"Last week, the House of Representatives passed the EmploymentNon-Discrimination Act (ENDA) by a vote of 235-184. As we had anticipated, the Democratic leadership demonstrated their eagerness to pander to pro-homosexual activists and their narrow interests, and proved to be very deceptive in their scheduling of the vote.

Sadly, the out-of-touch 110th Congress has once again shown itself willing to threaten our Nation's precious rights for purely political concerns. Most analysts have emphasized that the bill fell far short of the necessary number of votes to override the veto President Bush has repeatedly promised. Thankfully, the White House responded to the vote by announcing that the President will not allow this dangerous and divisive legislation to become the law of the land.

Despite the fact that ENDA has passed the House and will likely sail through the Senate under the sponsorship of Ted Kennedy (D-MA), Liberty Counsel's friends and supporters helped achieve some important victories in this battle.

Here are a few points of which we can be justifiably proud:

*We bombarded key congressional leaders with over 20,000 faxes urging ENDA's rejection at crucial points in the bill's progress through the House. Well done!

*The pressure from outraged citizens caused 25 Democrats to break ranks with their leadership. There can be no doubt that Liberty Counsel's aggressive campaign helped narrow the vote to a point well below the number required to be "veto proof."

*Our Washington office did a stellar job of keeping our supporters informed of the Democratic leadership's deceptive handling of the bill, and effectively coordinated our strategy's successful implementation.

*With the help of thousands of Liberty Counsel supporters, we effectively publicized the bill's fatal flaws. The ridiculous "transgender" provisions, for instance, became politically unsupportable and drove a wedge in the pro-homosexual lobby that will continue to be a major problem to them.

*While it is disappointing that our elected officials would pass such a flawed and dangerous bill, we can be thankful that thousands of Liberty Counsel friends and supporters stood up to the pro-homosexual steamroller. Now, our clear voice of reason needs to be heard in the Senate! Even though ENDA is expected to get the Senate's "rubber stamp,"our Senators need to know they are going to pay a huge political price for going along with ENDA's deception!

Here's what I need you to do:

1) Pray for President Bush and his resolve to veto ENDA (we'll coordinate an outpouring of support for his veto at the appropriate time).

2) Get ready to bombard the Senate in the same way we did the House! As soon as the Senate vote is announced we will be sending you an update.

3) Give a generous gift today to replenish our depleted war chest. Liberty Counsel must be ready to stand up to the next outrageous initiative from the notorious leadership of the 110th Congress!

To help Liberty Counsel, go here:
http://www.libertyaction.org/3081/offer.asp?rid=13336825 I believe the battle to stop ENDA continues to be one of the most important citizen actions in the history of our Nation. Please don't stop praying. Don't stop resisting this outrageous attack on our constitutional rights. We must continue fighting until the danger is over! Thank you for standing with us and saying, "NO!" to pro-homosexual forces.

More to Pray and Take Action About

We are back from Minnesota for awhile. There are many important things for us to pray about and take action on.

The Freedom of Choice Act is in the House Judiciary Committee. Please pray that bill never becomes a law. Start making weekly phone calls to your Representative asking him/her to vote against the bill. If this bill were ever to become law, legalizing tax supported abortion up to the day of delivery, I believe a rapid and devastating judgment from God would be released upon our nation.

Please pray for a Candidate who supports Biblical values to be nominated for President and to be elected as President. Ask God for a President that will stand for Biblical solutions for the problems facing our nation. One that will lead in righteousness, honesty and strength. Pray for godly candidates to be elected to fill every vacancy and to replace the unrighteous.

You have probably heard about Darfur but you may not know a lot about it. There is a great website: http://www.savedarfur.org/ that has the history of the problem and many other articles about Darfur. Be in the know. Check it out.

Please visit the daily sites on the blog sidebar. This will help you as you seek to become a Christian activist. The nation needs to hear your voice.

Of Death and a Crooked Rocketship

On November 4th of 2007, my mother passed on to be with the Lord. We are now in Minnesota where my mother lived and will be flying home tomorrow -- hence the lack of blog entries. I published the last entry before we left for the airport.

While I was on the phone telling my daughter about my mother's passing and making plans to fly out to MN, my four year old granndson interrupted our conversation with a crisis of his own -- his rocketship was crooked at the bottom and required my daughter's immediate attention.

It struck me that the passing into eternity of a loved mother and grandmother, a very important matter for my daughter and I, and the crooked rocketship of my grandson, a very important matter for him were problems of crisis proportions for each of us. The size of one's crisis is dependent on the perspective and maturity of the individual.

Where do we go when we have a crisis? My grandson knew who to go to to solve his crooked rocketship problem -- my daughter. She was able to solve his problem by straightening out a few leggos. What do we do when we have a problem? It is comforting to know that whatever the size our problems are, no matter how large they may seem, to our dear Heavenly Father, who is the God of all comfort, they are as easy to fix as my grandson's crooked rocketship. God and God alone has the perfect perspective and all the answers. Our problems are never beyond His ability to solve, fix, remedy and heal. He also has the ability to use every situation to perfect and strengthen us. The only real problem lies in that we don't always have the good sense to bring everything to Him in prayer asking for His strength and His help.

Just as my grandson knew who to go to to fix his rocketship, it is my prayer for each one of us that we will also know that we have a heavenly Father who is full of love, compassion and provision for all of our problems, and who eagerly waits for us to bring everything to Him in prayer.

Shalom, dear ones~~~~

Day 40 of 40 Days for Life

Thank you David Bereit, Father Frank Pavone and Carmen Pate for 40 Days for Life!

40 DAYS FOR LIFE:
DAY 40, NOVEMBER 4
Daily Devotional by Fr. Frank Pavone*********************

INTENTION: Pray that the witness of 40 Days for Life bears abundant fruit, and that we begin again each day to storm the gates of hell until God welcomes us into the gates of heaven.

SCRIPTURE: "On this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it." -- Matthew 16:18

REFLECTION: When we read this verse, we usually think that the Lord is promising that the church, which is His Body, will withstand all the attacks launched against it. Of course, that is true. But when we think about it more carefully, we realize that in a battle, the gates do not run out into the battlefield to attack the enemy. Rather, they stand still to defend the city from the enemy attacking it. So when the Lord says that the gates of hell will not prevail against the church, who is doing the attacking? It is the church storming the gates! The church, all of God's people in Christ, is called to take the offensive, to run into enemy territory, and to gain ground for Jesus Christ. We do not wait for an invitation; we already have a command. We prepare, but we do not wait for circumstances to be perfect; we already have one who has gone before us.

During these 40 days, we have stormed the gates. We have taken the offensive. We have pushed forward the boundaries of the kingdom. And we must keep doing so, in numerous ways. The pro-life effort is "a matter of the heart." To end abortion, our hearts must be broken. This evil cannot simply be something we know about or debate. We have to allow it to grieve us, to bring us to tears, to bring us to our knees. "Blessed are those who mourn," for only when our hearts are broken can they open wide enough to receive the grace and strength to storm the gates. Indeed, the gates of hell will not prevail. The gates of falsehood will flee in the presence of truth. The gates of sin will melt in the presence of grace. The gates of death will fall in the presence of the church, the People of Life!

PRAYER: Father, we praise you.

We have heard the voice of your Son,
And therefore we can make our voices heard.

We have been justified in the blood of your Son,
And therefore we can oppose every form of injustice.

We have repented of our sins,
And therefore we can lead the sinner to repentance.

We have done battle with the power of evil,
And therefore we can have compassion on those still within its grip.

We have been freed from the kingdom of darkness,
And therefore we can bear witness to your Kingdom of Light.

May the witness of all your people through these 40 Days for Life bear abundant fruit, and may we begin again each day to storm the gates of hell until You welcome us into the gates of heaven. We pray in the victorious name of Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN

Thankful To God,

Action Against ENDA

One of the bills the Christian Community needs to stand against is ENDA, (Employment Non Discrimination Act). This act if passed makes it impossible for churches, daycare centers, Christian businesses, schools and everyone else to refuse to hire someone who is gay, transgender, shemale (1/2 sex change), or sexchanged individuals because of their sexual identity.

PRAY: Set the Blood of Jesus against ENDA. Ask God to stop this from becoming law in America.
TAKE ACTION: Our friends at Tradition Values Coalition ask that you do two things to help block ENDA: (1) Send an email to your US Representative so your position will be documented — Cap Wiz and, (2) Call your US Representative and register your comments: 202-225-3121.

Shalom~

Day 39 of 40 Days for Life

40 Days for Life is coming to a close. Perhaps you have been growing tired of the blogs about 40 Days for Life and are happy they won't be around much longer. If you have been thinking that, just pause and think: what if 4,000 or better yet, 40,000 churches and/or para church organizations had promoted this event and what if we had 50 to 200 people from each of the 4,000 to 40,000 venues praying for abortion to stop, for the abortuaries to close, and repenting for letting abortion go on for so long in our country? Would that have been enough for God to hear from Heaven and heal our land. I don't know, but we dare not stop praying daily for the protection of the unborn, for abortion in America to end, and for salvation and/or healing for those who have had abortions and those who have preformed abortions.

We must stop this evil practice. The Kings of Israel that allowed their sons and daughters to be burned in the fire as a ritual sacrifice to Molech were judged. Killing babies, born or preborn, is never going to result in blessing. We dare not think that judgment will not fall on America if we continue to murder our unborn children. Please continue to pray and fast for America and the end of abortion. Ask God to smite the Freedom of Choice Act and Roe v Wade. Set the Blood of Jesus against abortion. Pray without ceasing.

*********************************************
40 DAYS FOR LIFE:
DAY 39, NOVEMBER 3
Daily Devotional by Fr. Frank Pavone************

INTENTION: Pray for those who work in the abortion industry, and for those who have repented of committing abortions and have resolved to defend life.
SCRIPTURE: Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last. The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, "Surely this was a righteous man." When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away. -- Luke 23:46-48
REFLECTION: "The Centurion who stood at the foot of the cross of Christ suddenly became horrified at the crucifixion he was ordered to carry out. When Christ died, this Centurion dropped his sword and fell to his knees exclaiming, 'Surely, this was an innocent man!' "Those of us who have participated in the killing of unborn children are the Centurions of today. We have dropped our swords against the unborn child. Now we must recognize the depth of our guilt and deal with the ramifications... To revitalize our humanity we need to forgive and be forgiven, to reconcile and be healed." These words come from a brochure of the "Society of Centurions," an organization for former abortion providers. These words convey in a beautiful and moving way what is happening across the nation as hundreds of abortionists and their staff experience repentance, conversion, and healing. The former abortionists you may already know -- like Bernard Nathanson, Carol Everett, and Tony Levatino -- are only the "tip of the iceberg." There are so many others, and more continue to come to the light of Christ each day. Priests for Life, which operates the world's largest abortion recovery program, Rachel's Vineyard, likewise assists former abortionists in their journey of repentance. I (Fr. Frank) will never forget sitting with a group of these men and women for a period of several days one Holy Week, and listening to them resolve that when they got back home, they would attempt to contact every woman on whom they had ever performed an abortion, and apologize to her. I also heard them tell of how, after their conversion, they would dedicate each passing day to another of the children they had killed. They would name those children, write them letters, and pray a profound prayer of apology. How does this conversion begin? My experience confirms what Dr. Philip Ney has also found. He writes, "The factors that changed their opinion on performing abortions, in the following order of frequency, were: evidence of the infant's humanity, a spiritual experience, personal distress, evidence of the mother's distress, scientific articles, being accepted as a person, a personal relationship with a pro-lifer, pro-life pickets. For most...there was more than one factor" (The Centurion's Pathway, p. 77). The journey is not easy. There is so much pain and guilt to deal with and so many rationalizations to undo that the Centurion will be tempted to say, "Everything is OK now; Jesus has healed me, and I'm just going to forget the past." But the Jesus who heals us calls us to face the truth of what we've done, make restitution where possible, and engage in the hard work of mending relationships. Let's pray for the Centurions, and may their numbers increase!
PRAYER: Lord, we thank you for those who have repented of committing abortions and have resolved to defend life. We too repent and resolve. We repent of every instance in which fear has made us silent when we should have spoken. We repent of the ongoing bloodshed in our land, and for thinking that we can deprive the unborn of protection but keep it for ourselves. We resolve that we will work more generously to advance your Kingdom. We resolve that we will advance the cause of righteous candidates for public office, and that we will be more afraid of offending you by our silence than of offending others by our speech. We resolve that we will serve you faithfully in the pro-life cause all the days of our lives, and proclaim Your Name to the nations, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.****

Day 38 of 40 Days for Life

40 DAYS FOR LIFE:
DAY 38, NOVEMBER 2
Daily Devotional by Fr. Frank Pavone*******************************

INTENTION: Pray that we fully recognize in the unborn child our brother, our sister, and we recommit ourselves to care for them.
SCRIPTURE: "Now Cain said to his brother Abel, 'Let's go out to the field.' And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. Then the Lord said to Cain, 'Where is your brother Abel?' 'I don't know,' he replied. 'Am I my brother's keeper?' The LORD said, 'What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground. Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand." -- Genesis 4:8-11
REFLECTION: After Cain committed the first murder in human history, God asked him, "Where is your brother?" He replied by saying, "I don't know." In 1973, the Supreme Court was asked the same question, and gave the same answer. Unable to admit that the unborn children are our brothers and sisters, the Supreme Court said, "We need not resolve the difficult question of when life begins. When those trained in the respective disciplines of medicine, philosophy, and theology are unable to arrive at any consensus, the judiciary, at this point in the development of man's knowledge, is not in a position to speculate as to the answer" (Roe vs. Wade, 410 U.S. 113,159). Boil all that down to three words, and it's, "I don't know." The question of when life begins, of course, is not difficult to answer at all. The difficulty comes in accepting the responsibility for our brother, our sister, whose life has begun. The same question, "Where is your brother?", is asked of each of us today. By participating in the 40 Days for Life, we have been answering that question each day, going to where our brothers and sisters are killed, and proclaiming that we have a responsibility to them. By all the pro-life work we will continue to do, we likewise answer that question which reaches from one end of human history to the other. The question, "Where is your brother?", will be asked at the final judgment. Each person will answer it and be judged by it. May we be judged to have recognized and loved all our brothers and sisters, born and unborn.
PRAYER: Father, today we hear your voice, and we respond to the question you ask each of us: "Where is your brother?" We recognize in the unborn child our brother, our sister, and we recommit ourselves today to care for them. Yes, Father, you have entrusted us to the care of one another. We rejoice that you have given us the grace to respond. As we work to renew our culture, we look forward to the great day of the coming of your Son, when every eye will see him, even of those who pierced him, and every knee shall bend, and every tongue confess, to the glory of God the Father, JESUS CHRIST IS LORD! In His Holy Name, Amen.

Day 37 of 40 Days for Life

40 DAYS FOR LIFE: DAY 37, NOVEMBER 1
Daily Devotional by Fr. Frank Pavone

INTENTION: Pray that we may find true freedom by humbly submitting all our choices to God, and leading others by word and example to do the same.
SCRIPTURE: Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman,"Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'" "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." -- Genesis 3:1-4
REFLECTION: St. John in his first letter sums up the mission of Jesus by saying, "The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil" (1 John 3:8). What "works of the devil" does Jesus destroy? Jesus Himself tells us that the devil "was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks in character, because he is a liar and the father of lies" (John 8:44). In one and the same breath, Our Lord calls the devil a liar and a murderer. Lies and murder go together. The only way abortion can continue on such a horrible scale is for it to be covered in lies, sugar coated with denials and distortions of truth. Jesus has come to destroy the works of the devil. "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life" (John 14:6). He is the way to salvation precisely because He is the Truth, shattering the devil's lies, and because He is the Life, undoing the devil's work of death. We see the devil act in in character with lies and murder from the first pages of the Bible. Adam and Eve had been told they could eat of any tree in the garden except "the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.""In the day that you eat of it," God warned them, "you shall die" (Gen 2:17). What is wrong with knowing good from evil? Aren't we supposed to know the difference between good and evil? Why, then, is this the one tree of which our first parents were not to eat? The answer lies in the fact that the "knowledge of good and evil" here does not simply mean "knowing." It means that Adam and Eve would think they could decide the difference between good and evil, that they would be the ones to determine what was right and wrong, that they would be the norm of morality. This is the original temptation. "What's right and wrong for me is up to me... What's right and wrong for you is up to you... Do not impose your morality on me... I will create my own values... I am accountable to nobody but myself." In other words, it's all up to my own personal choice. The original sin is to put choice above goodness and truth, to abuse freedom by trying to create what is right rather than submit to it. Jesus showed us the way of submission to the Father, of obedience even unto death on a cross. That is why he was highly exalted. Following his example, and living in the power of the Spirit, we lead our culture from the self-exaltation of "choice" that leads to death to the self-sacrifice of obedience that leads to life.
PRAYER: Father, save us from the lies of Satan. Save us from the thought that we can be like you by becoming our own source of morality. Free us from the desire to exalt ourselves. Give us the Spirit of your Son, who humbled himself and was therefore highly exalted by you. May we find our true freedom by submitting all our choices to you, and lead others by word and example to do the same. We pray in Jesus' Name, AMEN.

Day 36 of 40 Days for Life -- A Must Read Blog

Thank you Fr. Pavone for sharing the up lifting REFLECTION!

40 DAYS FOR LIFE: DAY 36, OCTOBER 31
Daily Devotional by Fr. Frank Pavone*****************

INTENTION: Pray that we become vessels of hope to all around us, especially to those who minister in the pro-life movement.
SCRIPTURE: "On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, 'Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!'"-- Luke 24:1-5
REFLECTION: I share with you today this inspiring meditation based on a sermon I once heard, and adapted to the concerns of the pro-life movement.

It's Friday. Jesus is on the cross. He has been killed by his enemies; he is off the scene. But that's because it's Friday. Sunday's comin'!

It's Friday. Mary is weeping in bitter grief; the disciples are fleeing in all directions, confused and afraid. But that's because it's Friday. Sunday'scomin'!

It's Friday. Pilate is washing his hands; the Pharisees are calling the shots; the Roman soldiers are strutting around with their spears. But that's because it's Friday. Sunday's comin'!

It's Friday. The forces that oppress the poor and abandon the lowly and trample upon the rights of the weak, making them suffer and robbing them of hope, are in control. But that's because it's Friday. Sunday's comin'!

It's Friday. Satan is doing his dance, and he thinks he rules the world. Governments do his bidding, and businesses do his work, and institutions are at his command. But that's because it's Friday. Sunday'scomin'!

It's Friday. Abortionists continue their work 4,000 times a day, tearing off the arms and legs of little babies and crushing their heads. But that's because it's Friday. Sunday's comin'!

It's Friday. Pro-abortion groups put out their hands and receive blood money from billionaires who are as deceived as they are. But that's because it's Friday. Sunday's comin'!

It's Friday. Liars attempt to speak for all women and hide the pain of abortion, and ignore the evidence of how it harms women, and call abortion a blessing. But that's because it's Friday. Sunday's comin'!

It's Friday. Judicial activists have their way, writing the law instead of applying it, ignoring the will of the American people and allowing abortion to continue. But that's because it's Friday. Sunday's comin'!

It's Friday. People of hardened hearts guard their abortion clinics and usher desperate women in to have their abortions, while keeping them from the pro-life people who want to give them hope. But that's because it's Friday. Sunday's comin'!

It's Friday. Many preachers of God's word are silent in the face of all these evils, as they spend more energy calculating how to keep safe from lawyers than how to keep safe from the wrath of God. But that's becauseit's Friday. Sunday's comin'!

Hope does not mean that we ignore or minimize the evils around us. It means, rather, that we see the whole picture, which is that evil is conquered because of what happened one Sunday morning. The power of sin and death has been broken by the Resurrection of Christ. We are called to proclaim, celebrate, and serve that victory, waiting in joyful hope for Christ's return and the full flowering of the Culture of Life! Indeed, Sunday's comin'!
PRAYER: Lord, fill your people with new hope. We are fully aware of the evils that are around us. We know that in so many ways, it's Friday. But we also know that Sunday is coming. We know that the kingdom of darkness has been conquered, and that a new Kingdom has been established among us. Make us vessels of hope to all around us, especially to those who minister in the pro-life movement, that as we engage in the difficult work ahead, we may experience the peace and joy that come only from you and that nobody can take away from us. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.

Rejoice, Sunday's comin'!!!!!~~~~~

Meet the Candidate: Barack Obama

The New York Family Policy Council's mission statement demands that we educate the public about the issues that impact the family. The coming elections will impact the family to a great extent, therefore, we will be bringing you information on the candidates of each party which is found on the candidates' own websites and on wikipedia.org.
The New York Family Policy neither supports nor opposes any political party or candidate running for office. The information contained in this blog is solely for the purpose of educating the reader about the candidate's political history, personal history and positions on the issues.

The following is from Obama's website: www.barackobama.com/
" Senator Obama has been able to develop innovative approaches to challenge the status quo and get results. Americans are tired of divisive ideological politics, which is why Senator Obama has reached out to Republicans to find areas of common ground. He has tried to break partisan logjams and take on seemingly intractable problems. During his tenure in Washington and in the Illinois State Senate, Barack Obama has accumulated a record of bipartisan success.
Strengthening America Overseas
As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Obama has fought to strengthen America's position in the world. Reaching across the aisle, Obama has tackled problems such as preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction and stopping the genocide in Darfur.
Plan to End the Iraq War
Before the war in Iraq ever started, Senator Obama said that it was wrong in its conception. In 2002, then Illinois State Senator Obama said Saddam Hussein posed no imminent threat to the United States and that invasion would lead to an occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences. Since then, Senator Obama has laid out a plan on the way forward in Iraq that has largely been affirmed by the bipartisan Iraq Study Group led by James Baker and Lee Hamilton.
Creating a Healthcare System that Works
"I...believe that every American has the right to affordable health care. I believe that the millions of Americans who can't take their children to a doctor when they get sick have that right...We now face an opportunity - and an obligation - to turn the page on the failed politics of yesterday's health care debates. It's time to bring together businesses, the medical community, and members of both parties around a comprehensive solution to this crisis, and it's time to let the drug and insurance industries know that while they'll get a seat at the table, they don't get to buy every chair." -Barack Obama, Speech in Iowa City, IA, 5/27/07
Fighting Poverty
There are 37 million poor Americans. Most poor Americans are in the workforce, yet still cannot afford to make ends meet. And too many poor Americans are single mothers who are raising children. Barack Obama has been a lifelong advocate for the poor -- as a young college graduate, he rejected the high salaries of corporate America and moved to the South Side of Chicago to work as a community organizer. As an organizer, Obama worked with churches, Chicago residents and local government to set up job training programs for the unemployed and after school programs for kids.
Environment
Barack Obama believes that we have a responsibility to our children to leave this Earth better than we found it. He has a plan to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and to turn the global warming crisis into a moment of opportunity for innovation and job creation. And as president, he will restore America's promise of a clean and beautiful environment by cleaning up our air and water, building healthier communities with fewer toxins, and preserving our forests and other national treasures. In doing so, Obama will make sure that our environmental laws and policies balance America's need for a healthy, sustainable environment with economic growth.
Energy
Senator Obama has been a leader in the Senate in pushing for a comprehensive national energy policy and has introduced a number of bills to get us closer to the goal of energy independence. By putting aside partisan battles, he has found common ground on CAFE, renewable fuels, and clean coal.
Fulfilling Our Covenant with Seniors
Americans turning 65 this year have grown our economy by 4.5 times over the course of their working lives. They have tilled our soil, defended our country, taught our children, worked in our factories, and raised a new generation to build upon their successes. And yet, many struggle to get by. Threats to Social Security and Medicare, skyrocketing health costs, and abuse and neglect of seniors all jeopardize our unspoken covenant: our seniors worked hard to take care of us, and now we must be here for them.
Improving Our Schools
Throughout America's history, education has been the vehicle for social and economic mobility, giving hope and opportunity to millions of young people. Our schools must prepare students not only to meet the demands of the global economy, but also help students take their place as committed and engaged citizens. It must ensure that all students have a quality education regardless of race, class, or background. Barack Obama is committed to strengthening our public schools to maximize our country's greatest natural resource - the American people. Obama believes that we must equip poor and struggling districts, both rural and urban, with the support and resources they need to provide disadvantaged students with an opportunity to reach their full potential. Too often, our leaders present this issue as an either - or debate, divided between giving our schools more funding, or demanding more accountability. Obama believes that we have to do both, and has offered innovative ideas to break through the political stalemate in Washington.
Protecting Our Homeland
Five years after 9/11, our country is still unprepared for a terrorist attack. From improving security for our transit systems and chemical plants, to increasing cargo screening in our airports and seaports, the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission have been underfunded and ignored. The 9/11 Commission gave the government five F's and 12 D's on the implementation of its recommendations. Senator Obama is a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and has supported efforts to base homeland security spending on risk rather than pork-barrel politics. He has also introduced legislation to strengthen chemical plant and drinking water security and to enhance disaster preparedness.
Immigration and the Border
Barack Obama believes the immigration issue has been exploited by politicians to divide the nation rather than find real solutions. This divisiveness has allowed the illegal immigration problem to worsen, with borders that are less secure than ever and an economy that depends on millions of workers living in the shadows.
Protecting the Right to Vote
There is no more fundamental American right than the right to vote. Before the landmark 1965 Voting Rights Act, barriers such as literacy tests, poll taxes and property requirements disenfranchised many Americans, especially minorities. More than 40 years later, there are still numerous obstacles to ensuring that every citizen has the ability to vote.
Honoring Our Veterans
As a member of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee, Senator Obama is committed to helping the heroes who defend our nation today and the veterans who fought in years past. A grandson of a World War II veteran who went to college on the G.I. Bill, Senator Obama has reached out to Republicans and Democrats in order to honor our commitment to America's veterans.
Cleaning Up Washington's Culture of Corruption
Throughout his political career, Barack Obama has been a leader in fighting for open and honest government. As a U.S. Senator, he has spearheaded the effort to clean up Washington in the wake of the Jack Abramoff scandal. In a politically charged election year, Obama acknowledged that corruption was a problem that plagued both political parties. He subsequently enlisted the help of Republican allies to limit lobbyist influence, shine sunlight into the earmarks process and promote open government.
Strengthening Families and Communities
Strong families raise successful children and keep communities together. While Senator Obama does not believe that we can simply legislate healthy families, good parenting skills or economic success, he does believe we can eliminate roadblocks that parents face and provide tools to help them succeed. A husband and father of two, Senator Obama has promoted strong families in the Senate.
Reconciling Faith and Politics
In June of 2006, Senator Obama delivered what was called the most important speech on religion and politics in 40 years. Speaking before an evangelical audience, Senator Obama candidly discussed his own religious conversion and doubts, and the need for a deeper, more substantive discussion about the role of faith in American life."

The following was found on www.wikipedia.org

Senate career
Obama was sworn in as a Senator on January 4, 2005.[50] In a move considered exceptional for a first-term incoming senator, he recruited Pete Rouse, a 30-year veteran of the Washington political scene and former chief of staff to Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle, as his chief of staff.[51] Karen Kornbluh, an economist who was deputy chief of staff to former Secretary of the Treasury Robert Rubin was hired as Obama's policy adviser.[52] In July 2005, Samantha Power, Pulitzer-winning author on human rights and genocide, joined Obama's team.[53] He holds assignments on the Senate Committees for Foreign Relations; Health, Education, Labor and Pensions; Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; and Veterans' Affairs,[54] and is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus.[55]

109th Congress
Obama sponsored 152 bills and resolutions brought before the 109th Congress in 2005 and 2006, and cosponsored another 427.[56][57] He took an active role in the Senate's drive for improved border security and immigration reform. Beginning in 2005, Obama co-sponsored the "Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act" introduced by Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).[58] He later added three amendments to S. 2611, the "Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act," sponsored by Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA).[59][60] S. 2611 passed the Senate in May 2006, but failed to gain majority support in the U.S. House of Representatives.[61] In September 2006, Obama supported a related bill, the Secure Fence Act, authorizing construction of fencing and other security improvements along the United States–Mexico border.[62] President Bush signed the Secure Fence Act into law in October 2006, calling it "an important step toward immigration reform."[63]

Senate bill sponsors Tom Coburn (R-OK) and Obama join President Bush at the signing ceremony for the Coburn-Obama Transparency Act of 2006.[64]
Partnering first with Sen. Richard Lugar (R-IN), and then with Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), Obama successfully introduced two initiatives bearing his name. "Lugar-Obama" expands the Nunn-Lugar cooperative threat reduction concept to conventional weapons, including shoulder-fired missiles and anti-personnel mines.[65][66] The "Coburn-Obama Transparency Act" provides for a web site, managed by the Office of Management and Budget, listing all organizations receiving Federal funds from 2007 onward, and providing breakdowns by the agency allocating the funds, the dollar amount given, and the purpose of the grant or contract.[67][68] In December 2006, President Bush signed into law the "Democratic Republic of the Congo Relief, Security, and Democracy Promotion Act," marking the first federal legislation to be enacted with Obama as its primary sponsor.[69]
As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Obama made official trips to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. In August 2005, he traveled to Russia, Ukraine, and Azerbaijan. The trip focused on strategies to control the world's supply of conventional weapons, biological weapons, and weapons of mass destruction as a first defense against potential terrorist attacks.[70] Following meetings with U.S. military in Kuwait and Iraq in January 2006, Obama visited Jordan, Israel, and the Palestinian territories. At a meeting with Palestinian students two weeks before Hamas won the legislative election, Obama warned that "the U.S. will never recognize winning Hamas candidates unless the group renounces its fundamental mission to eliminate Israel."[71] He left for his third official trip in August 2006, traveling to South Africa, Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Chad. In a nationally televised speech at the University of Nairobi, he spoke forcefully on the influence of ethnic rivalries and corruption in Kenya.[72] The speech touched off a public debate among rival leaders, some formally challenging Obama's remarks as unfair and improper, others defending his positions.[73][74]

110th Congress
On the first day of the newly Democratic-controlled 110th Congress, in a column published in the Washington Post, Obama called for an end to "any and all practices that would lead a reasonable person to believe that a public servant has become indebted to a lobbyist."[75] He joined with Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) in strengthening restrictions on travel in corporate jets to S.1, the Legislative Transparency and Accountability Act of 2007, which passed the Senate with a 96-2 majority.[76][77] Obama joined Charles Schumer (D-NY) in sponsoring S. 453, a bill to criminalize deceptive practices in federal elections, including fraudulent flyers and automated phone calls, as witnessed in the 2006 midterm elections.[78][79] Obama's energy initiatives scored pluses and minuses with environmentalists, who welcomed his sponsorship with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) of a climate change bill to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by two-thirds by 2050, but were skeptical of Obama's support for a bill promoting liquefied coal production.[80][81] Also during the first month of the 110th Congress, Obama introduced the "Iraq War De-Escalation Act," a bill proposing to cap troop levels in Iraq, begin phased redeployment, and remove all combat brigades from Iraq before April 2008.[82][83]
Later in 2007, Obama sponsored with Kit Bond (R-MO) an amendment to the 2008 Defense Authorization Act adding safeguards for personality disorder military discharges, and calling for a review by the Government Accounting Office following reports that the procedure had been used inappropriately to reduce government costs.[84] He sponsored the "Iran Sanctions Enabling Act" supporting divestment of state pension funds from Iran's oil and gas industry,[85] and joined Chuck Hagel (R-NE) in introducing legislation to prevent nuclear terrorism.[86] He also sponsored a Senate amendment to the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to provide one year of job protection for family members caring for soldiers with combat-related injuries.[87] After passing both houses of Congress with bipartisan majorities, SCHIP was vetoed by President Bush in early October 2007, a move Obama declared "shows a callousness of priorities that is offensive to the ideals we hold as Americans."[88]

Presidential campaign
This article or section contains information about one or more candidates in an upcoming or ongoing election. Content may change as the election approaches.
Main article: Barack Obama presidential campaign, 2008

Obama on stage with his wife and two daughters just before announcing his presidential campaign in Springfield, Illinois, on February 10, 2007.[89]
In February 2007, standing before the Old State Capitol building in Springfield, Illinois, Obama announced his candidacy for the 2008 U.S. presidential election.[5] Describing his working life in Illinois, and symbolically linking his presidential campaign to Abraham Lincoln's 1858 House Divided speech, Obama said: "That is why, in the shadow of the Old State Capitol, where Lincoln once called on a house divided to stand together, where common hopes and common dreams still live, I stand before you today to announce my candidacy for President of the United States of America."[90] The announcement followed months of speculation on whether Obama would run in 2008.
Through the fall of 2006, Obama had spoken at political events across the country in support of Democratic candidates for the midterm elections.[91] In September 2006, he was the featured speaker at Iowa Senator Tom Harkin's annual steak fry, an event traditionally attended by presidential hopefuls in the lead-up to the Iowa caucus.[92] Speculation intensified in October 2006 when Obama first said he had "thought about the possibility" of running for president, departing from earlier statements that he intended to serve out his six-year Senate term through 2010.[93] Following Obama's statement, opinion polling organizations added his name to surveyed lists of Democratic candidates. The first such poll, taken in November 2006, ranked Obama in second place with 17% support among Democrats after Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) who placed first with 28% of the responses.[94] In December 2006, Obama spoke at a New Hampshire event celebrating Democratic Party midterm election victories in the first-in-the-nation U.S. presidential primary state.[95][96]
Obama's campaign raised US$58 million during the first half of 2007, topping all other candidates and exceeding previous records for the first six months of any year before an election year.[97] Small donors, those contributing in increments of less than $200, accounted for 29% of Obama's record-breaking total, more than for any other 2008 presidential campaign.[98] His campaign reported adding 108,000 new donors through third quarter fundraising, for a total of 365,000 individual contributors in the first nine months.[99] In May 2007, Obama became the first presidential candidate to be newly assigned Secret Service protection more than 18 months before a general election.[100] The Rasmussen polling organization reported in May 2007 that 49% of Americans consider it "somewhat likely" or "very likely" that Obama will be elected.[101] Also in May and again two months later, Zogby International reported that Obama leads all prospective Republican opponents in polling for the 2008 general election.[102] If elected, Obama would become the first black U.S. president.[103]

Political advocacy (See also: Political positions of Barack Obama)
Obama speaking at a rally in Conway, South Carolina on August 23, 2007.[104]
On the role of government in economic affairs, Obama has written: "We should be asking ourselves what mix of policies will lead to a dynamic free market and widespread economic security, entrepreneurial innovation and upward mobility [...] we should be guided by what works."[105] Speaking before the National Press Club in April 2005, he defended the New Deal social welfare policies of Franklin D. Roosevelt, associating Republican proposals to establish private accounts for Social Security with social Darwinism.[106] In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Obama spoke out against government indifference to growing economic class divisions, calling on both political parties to take action to restore the social safety net for the poor.[107] Shortly before announcing his presidential campaign, Obama told the health care advocacy group Families USA: "I am absolutely determined that by the end of the first term of the next president, we should have universal health care in this country."[108]
At the Tax Policy Center in September 2007, he credited special interests with distorting the U.S. tax code. "We are taxing income from work at nearly twice the level that we're taxing gains for investors," Obama said. "We've lost the balance between work and wealth."[109] His plan would eliminate taxes for senior citizens with incomes of less than US$50,000 a year, repeal tax cuts for the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans, and simplify filing of income tax returns by pre-filling wage and bank information already collected by the IRS.[110] Announcing his presidential campaign's energy plan in October 2007, Obama said: "Businesses don’t own the sky, the public does, and if we want them to stop polluting it, we have to put a price on all pollution." He proposed a cap and trade auction system to restrict carbon emissions and a 10 year program of investments in new energy sources to reduce U.S. dependence on imported oil.[111]
Obama was an early opponent of Bush administration policies on Iraq. In the fall of 2002, before the start of the Iraq War, he addressed an anti-war rally in Chicago, saying:
I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al-Qaeda. I am not opposed to all wars. I'm opposed to dumb wars. You want a fight, President Bush? Let's finish the fight with Bin Laden and al-Qaeda, through effective, coordinated intelligence, and a shutting down of the financial networks that support terrorism, and a homeland security program that involves more than color-coded warnings.[112]
Speaking to the Chicago Council on Global Affairs in November 2006, Obama called for a "phased redeployment of U.S. troops from Iraq" and an opening of diplomatic dialogue with Syria and Iran.[113] In March 2007, in a speech to AIPAC, a pro-Israel lobby, he said that while the U.S. "should take no option, including military action, off the table, sustained and aggressive diplomacy combined with tough sanctions should be our primary means to prevent Iran from building nuclear weapons."[114] In August 2007, in a speech detailing his strategy for fighting global terrorism, Obama said:

Obama addressed the Save Darfur rally at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on April 30, 2006.[115]
I understand that President Musharraf [of Pakistan] has his own challenges. But let me make this clear. There are terrorists holed up in those mountains who murdered 3,000 Americans. They are plotting to strike again. It was a terrible mistake to fail to act when we had a chance to take out an al Qaeda leadership meeting in 2005. If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won’t act, we will.[116]
In a December 2005 Washington Post opinion column, and at the Save Darfur rally in April 2006, Obama called for more assertive action to oppose genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan.[117][118] He has divested US$180,000 in personal holdings of Sudan-related stock, and has urged divestment from companies doing business in Iran.[119][120] In the July-August 2007 issue of Foreign Affairs, Obama called for an outward looking post-Iraq War foreign policy and the renewal of American military, diplomatic, and moral leadership in the world. Saying "we can neither retreat from the world nor try to bully it into submission," he called on Americans to "lead the world, by deed and by example."[121]
Obama has encouraged Democrats to reach out to evangelicals and other religious people, saying, "if we truly hope to speak to people where they’re at—to communicate our hopes and values in a way that’s relevant to their own—we cannot abandon the field of religious discourse."[122][123] In December 2006, he joined Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS) at the "Global Summit on AIDS and the Church" organized by church leaders Kay and Rick Warren.[124] Together with Warren and Brownback, Obama took an HIV test, as he had done in Kenya less than four months earlier.[125] He encouraged "others in public life to do the same" to show "there is no shame in going for an HIV test."[126] Before the conference, 18 pro-life groups published an open letter stating, in reference to Obama's support for legal abortion: "In the strongest possible terms, we oppose Rick Warren's decision to ignore Senator Obama's clear pro-death stance and invite him to Saddleback Church anyway."[127] Addressing over 8,000 United Church of Christ members in June 2007, Obama challenged "so-called leaders of the Christian Right" for being "all too eager to exploit what divides us."[128]

Personal life
In 1988, while employed as a summer associate at the Chicago law firm of Sidley & Austin, Obama met Michelle Robinson, who also worked there.[129] They were married in 1992 and have two daughters, Malia, born in 1999, and Natasha ("Sasha"), born in 2001.[130] The family moved from their Hyde Park, Chicago condominium to a nearby US$1.6-million home in 2005.[131] Obama plays basketball, a sport he participated in as a member of his high school's varsity team.[132][133] Before announcing his presidential candidacy, he began a well-publicized effort to quit smoking. "I've never been a heavy smoker," Obama told the Chicago Tribune. "I've quit periodically over the last several years. I've got an ironclad demand from my wife that in the stresses of the campaign I don't succumb. I've been chewing Nicorette strenuously."[134] Replying to an Associated Press survey of 2008 presidential candidates' personal tastes, he specified "architect" as his alternate career choice and "chili" as his favorite meal to cook.[135] Asked to name a "hidden talent," Obama answered: "I'm a pretty good poker player."[136]
A theme of Obama's keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, and the title of his 2006 book, The Audacity of Hope, was inspired by his pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright.[137] In Chapter 6 of the book, titled "Faith," Obama writes that he "was not raised in a religious household." He describes his mother, raised by non-religious parents, as detached from religion, yet "in many ways the most spiritually awakened person that I have ever known." He describes his Kenyan father as "raised a Muslim," but a "confirmed atheist" by the time his parents met, and his Indonesian step-father as "a man who saw religion as not particularly useful." The chapter details how Obama, in his twenties, while working with local churches as a community organizer, came to understand "the power of the African American religious tradition to spur social change." Obama writes: "It was because of these newfound understandings—that religious commitment did not require me to suspend critical thinking, disengage from the battle for economic and social justice, or otherwise retreat from the world that I knew and loved—that I was finally able to walk down the aisle of Trinity United Church of Christ one day and be baptized."[138]

Books authored
The Audacity of Hope, with "#1 New York Times Bestseller" banner.
Obama has authored two bestselling books. The first, Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance, was published after his graduation from law school and before running for public office. In it he recalls his childhood in Honolulu and Jakarta, college years in Los Angeles and New York City, and his employment as a community organizer in Chicago in the 1980s. The book's last chapters describe his first visit to Kenya, a journey to connect with his Luo family and heritage. In his preface to the 2004 revised edition, Obama explains that he had hoped the story of his family "might speak in some way to the fissures of race that have characterized the American experience, as well as the fluid state of identity—the leaps through time, the collision of cultures—that mark our modern life."[139] Time magazine's Joe Klein wrote that the book "may be the best-written memoir ever produced by an American politician."[140] The audio book edition earned Obama the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album.[141]
His second book, The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream, was published in October 2006, three weeks before the 2006 midterm election. It was an immediate bestseller and rose to the top of the New York Times Best Seller List by early November 2006.[142] The Chicago Tribune credits the large crowds that gathered at book signings with influencing Obama's decision to run for president.[143] Former presidential candidate Gary Hart describes the book as Obama's "thesis submission" for the U.S. presidency: "It presents a man of relative youth yet maturity, a wise observer of the human condition, a figure who possesses perseverance and writing skills that have flashes of grandeur."[144] Reviewer Michael Tomasky writes that it does not contain "boldly innovative policy prescriptions that will lead the Democrats out of their wilderness," but does show Obama's potential to "construct a new politics that is progressive but grounded in civic traditions that speak to a wider range of Americans."[145] An Italian translation was published in April 2007 with a preface by Walter Veltroni, Mayor of Rome.[146] Spanish and German editions were published in June 2007.[147]

Cultural and political image
Supporters at a campaign rally in Austin, Texas, on February 23, 2007. Obama's campaign estimates 20,000 people attended this event.[148]
Supporters and critics have likened Obama's popular image to a cultural Rorschach test, a neutral persona on which people can project their personal histories and aspirations.[149][150] Obama's own stories about his family origins reinforce what a May 2004 New Yorker magazine article described as his "everyman" image.[151] In Dreams from My Father, he ties his maternal family history to possible Native American ancestors and distant relatives of Jefferson Davis, president of the southern Confederacy during the American Civil War.[152] Speaking to an elderly Jewish audience during his 2004 campaign for U.S. Senate, Obama linked the linguistic roots of his East African first name Barack to the Hebrew word baruch, meaning "blessed."[153] In an October 2006 interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Obama highlighted the diversity of his extended family: "Michelle will tell you that when we get together for Christmas or Thanksgiving, it's like a little mini-United Nations," he said. "I've got relatives who look like Bernie Mac, and I've got relatives who look like Margaret Thatcher. We've got it all."[154]
With his Kenyan father, upbringing in Honolulu and Jakarta, and Ivy League education, Obama's early life experiences differ markedly from those of African American politicians who launched their careers in the 1960s through participation in the civil rights movement.[155] During his Democratic primary campaign for U.S. Congress in 2000, two rival candidates charged that Obama was not sufficiently rooted in Chicago's black neighborhoods to represent constituents' concerns.[156] In January 2007, "The End of Blackness" author Debra Dickerson warned against drawing favorable cultural implications from Obama's political rise. "Lumping us all together," Dickerson wrote in Salon, "erases the significance of slavery and continuing racism while giving the appearance of progress."[157] Expressing puzzlement over questions about whether he is "black enough," Obama told an August 2007 meeting of the National Association of Black Journalists that the debate is not about his physical appearance or his record on issues of concern to black voters. "What it really lays bare," Obama offered, is that "we're still locked in this notion that if you appeal to white folks then there must be something wrong."[158]
Writing about Obama's political image in a March 2007 Washington Post opinion column, Eugene Robinson characterized him as "the personification of both-and," a messenger who rejects "either-or" political choices, and could "move the nation beyond the culture wars" of the 1960s.[159] Obama, who defines himself in The Audacity of Hope as "a Democrat, after all,"[160] has been criticized for his political actions by self-described progressive commentator David Sirota,[161] and complimented for his "can't we all just get along?" manner by conservative columnist George Will.[162] But in a December 2006 Wall Street Journal editorial headlined "The Man from Nowhere," former Ronald Reagan speech writer Peggy Noonan advised Will and other "establishment" commentators to get "down from your tippy toes" and avoid becoming too quickly excited about Obama's still early political career.[163] Echoing the inaugural address of John F. Kennedy, Obama acknowledged his youthful image, saying in an October 2007 campaign speech, "I wouldn't be here if, time and again, the torch had not been passed to a new generation."[164]
In March 2007 The Los Angeles Times ran an article by David Ehrenstein in which he claimed that Obama's supporters had projected onto him the qualities of the "magic negro," a term coined by Spike Lee and used by sociologists to describe certain archetypical characters in American cinema. [1] The opinion article stirred up controversy in the talk show and media arenas. An example of this was when Rush Limbaugh featured a song Barack The Magic Negro on his radio program.

Recognition and honors
An October 2005 article in the British journal New Statesman listed Obama as one of "10 people who could change the world."[165] In 2005 and again in 2007, Time magazine named him one of "the world's most influential people."[166] During his first three years in the U.S. Senate, Obama received Honorary Doctorates of Law from Knox College (2005),[167] University of Massachusetts Boston (2006),[168] Northwestern University (2006),[169] Xavier University of Louisiana (2006),[170] Southern New Hampshire University (2007),[171] and Howard University (2007).[172] "
