Day 35 of 40 Days for Life

Just in from 40 Days for Life:

"An employee of the Planned Parenthood facility [we've] been praying in front of has quit her job! She came out of the building and told the pray-ers that she couldn't work there anymore!!" Praise the Lord! Pray that God leads this lady into new work that helps, rather than hurts, people.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE: DAY 35, OCTOBER 30
Daily Devotional by: Fr. Frank Pavone*********************
INTENTION: Pray that we choose to trust God to bring an end to abortion soon, no matter how impossible that may seem to others.
SCRIPTURE: The hand of the LORD was upon me, and He brought me out by the Spirit of the LORD and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. He asked me,"Son of man, can these bones live?" I said, "O Sovereign LORD, you alone know." Then He said to me, "Prophesy to these bones and say to them, 'Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! This is what the Sovereign LORD says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD'" -- Ezekiel 37:1-6
REFLECTION: Imagine the dilemma Ezekiel was in when God asked him if the bones could live. He must have thought to himself: "If I say yes that's going to appear foolish; but if I say no, I risk distrusting God." So what did Ezekiel say? "I don't know." And so God said to him: "Speak, prophesy, speak the word of truth to the bones." Now he knew he was in a dilemma, because to speak to dry bones humanly appears foolish, but now, if he didn't do it, he would be disobeying God. It was the choice between the foolish thing and the dangerous thing. So he spoke, and what an awesome moment it must have been, because Scripture tells us that he heard a rattling sound and then he saw one bone begin to join to another. And God, as if cheering him on, said: "Keep speaking, speak again. Prophesy to the bones!" And the bones stood up, flesh came on them, and the spirit of life was breathed into the bones. And there you have a vast army living because of the word of truth. You and I are standing in a world today over a field of dry bones: those who have been killed by abortion, those who have been killed by so many other things attacking the dignity of human life. It is a valley of dry bones, because of the deaths and also because of the dead consciences. And God has placed us here; we find ourselves here in the midst of this incredible tragedy. Like Ezekiel, you and I are in a dilemma because God says to us: "Speak and proclaim the Word of Life. Keep doing it. Let nothing deter you." And so people can say, "This is humanly foolish, humanly impossible. How can we transform the world from the path of death that it's on?" Yet we choose to do the "foolish" thing rather than the dangerous thing. Speak, and speak like Ezekiel, for as long as you live! And if you ever doubt that we can bring an end to this culture of death, this destruction of the family, this destruction of life by abortion, if you ever think for a moment that it's impossible, then ask yourself this: Can a field of dry bones ever live? Or better yet ask yourself this: Can a man who has been scourged, crowned with thorns, nailed hands and feet to a cross, pierced with a lance, has died and been buried... Can such a man ever live again?
PRAYER: Lord, I thank you today for your command to speak the word of life, to build the culture of life. I thank you for giving me the holy dilemma of having to choose between the foolish thing or the dangerous thing. Yet for me the solution to that dilemma is clear. Lord, I will obey you, even if it means aiming for a goal which, in the eyes of others, seems foolish. I will obey you, and will hope for the end of abortion soon, no matter how impossible that may seem to others. I dare not mistrust you; I dare not doubt your power; I dare not fail to follow your call. In you, who raise the dead, all hope comes alive. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ the Risen Lord, AMEN

Giuliani started his political life as a Democrat, admiring the Kennedy family,[5] working as a party committee person on Long Island in the mid-1960s,[125] volunteering for Robert F. Kennedy's presidential campaign in 1968,[14] and voting for George McGovern for president in 1972.[126]
In 1975 Giuliani switched his party registration from Democratic to Independent.[14]

On December 8, 1980, one month after the election of Ronald Reagan brought Republicans back to power in Washington, he switched his party affiliation from Independent to Republican.[14] Giuliani later said the switches were because he found Democratic policies "naïve", and that "by the time I moved to Washington, the Republicans had come to make more sense to me."[5] Others suggested that the switches were made in order to get positions in the Justice Department.[14]

Giuliani's mother maintained in 1988 that, "He only became a Republican after he began to get all these jobs from them. He's definitely not a conservative Republican. He thinks he is, but he isn't. He still feels very sorry for the poor."[14]

Giuliani has been the target of criticism from many conservatives for some of his views, especially with regard to abortion, immigration, gay rights[127][128][129][130][131][132][133], and gun control.

In 1999, Giuliani said, “I’m pro-choice. I’m pro-gay rights.”[134] On the subject of a partial birth abortion ban, Giuliani said, “No, I have not supported [a ban], and I don’t see my position on that changing."[135]

However, on April 18, 2007, Guiliani stated that the United States Supreme Court "reached the correct conclusion in upholding the congressional ban on partial birth abortion."[136] Giuliani supported public funding for abortions when first running for mayor in 1989, and reaffirmed his support in 2007 while campaigning for the presidency.[137]

In October 2007, Dr. Raymond Burke, the Archbishop of St. Louis, threatened to deny Giuliani Communion due to his past and present support for abortion rights.[138]

Personal life
Giuliani has been married three times. On October 26, 1968, soon after he graduated from law school, he married his second cousin, educator Regina Peruggi, whom Giuliani had known since childhood. In the mid-70s the marriage was in trouble and in 1975 they agreed to a trial separation.[139] Peruggi did not accompany him to Washington when he accepted the job in the Attorney General's Office.[140] Giuliani met local television personality Donna Hanover sometime in 1982, and they began dating when she was working in Miami.[141] Giuliani filed for legal separation from Peruggi on August 12, 1982.[139] Giuliani and Hanover started living together later that year in Washington, D.C.[141] The Giuliani-Peruggi marriage was ended in two ways: a civil divorce was issued by the end of 1982,[142] while a Roman Catholic Church annulment of the Giuliani-Peruggi marriage was granted at the end of 1983,[139] according to Giuliani, because he discovered after 14 years of marriage that he and his wife were second cousins,[143] rather than third cousins,[140] and they did not have the Church dispensation thus needed.[144] Giuliani and Peruggi did not have any children.

Giuliani and Hanover then married in a Catholic ceremony at St. Monica's Church in New York on April 15, 1984.[145][139] They had two children, son Andrew (born January 30, 1986) and daughter Caroline (born 1989). Andrew first became a familiar sight by misbehaving at Giuliani's first mayoral inauguration, then with his father at New York Yankees games, of whom Rudy Giuliani is an enthusiastic fan; Andrew also was an accomplished junior golfer.

Beginning in 1996, Giuliani and Hanover's public relationship became distant, with Hanover appearing at few public events.[146] In 1997, a Vanity Fair article report that Giuliani had a romantic relationship with Cristyne Lategano, the mayor's communications director.[147] The mayor and Lategano denied the allegations. On Father's Day, 1995 Giuliani had told reporters that he was returning to Gracie Mansion to play ball with Andrew. However, he instead went to City Hall, to a basement suite with his press secretary. Three hours later, Hanover, angered, appeared at City Hall; yet a mayoral aide prevented her from entering the suite.[148]

In May 2000, the New York Daily News broke news of Giuliani's extramarital relationship with Judith Nathan, a sales manager for a pharmaceutical company. Giuliani then called a press conference to announce that he intended to separate from Hanover.[149][150][151] Hanover, however, had not been told about his plans before his press conference,[152] an omission for which Giuliani was widely criticized.[153] Previously, Giuliani had hinted at the relationship by referring to Nathan as his "very good friend." Giuliani now went on to praise Nathan as a "very, very fine woman", and said about his marriage with Hanover, that "over the course of some period of time in many ways, we've grown to live independent and separate lives." Hours later Hanover said, "I had hoped that we could keep this marriage together. For several years, it was difficult to participate in Rudy's public life because of his relationship with one staff member," a reference to Lategano. Giuliani, Hanover and Nathan appeared on the cover of People magazine in the aftermath.[154]

Giuliani then moved out of Gracie Mansion and into an apartment belonging to two gay friends.[155] Giuliani filed for divorce from Hanover in October 2000,[156] and an unpleasant public battle broke out between their representatives.[157] Nathan was barred by court order from entering Gracie Mansion (where Hanover still lived) or meeting his children before the divorce was final.[158]

In May 2001, in an effort to mitigate the bad publicity from the proceedings, Giuliani's attorney revealed (with the mayor's approval) that Giuliani was impotent due to his prostate cancer treatments and had not had sex with Nathan for the preceding year. "You don't get through treatment for cancer and radiation all by yourself," Giuliani said. "You need people to help you and care for you and support you. And I'm very fortunate I had a lot of people who did that, but nobody did more to help me than Judith Nathan."[159] Giuliani argued in a court case that he aimed to introduce Nathan to his children on Father's Day, 2001, and that Donna had prevented this visit.[160] Giuliani and Hanover finally settled their acrimonious divorce case in July 2002, after his mayoralty had ended, with Giuliani paying Hanover a $6.8 million settlement and granting her custody of their children.[161]

Giuliani subsequently married Judith Nathan on May 24, 2003, and thus gained a stepdaughter, Whitney. It was also Nathan's third marriage after two prior divorces.[154]

By March 2007, The New York Times and the New York Daily News reported that Rudy Giuliani had become estranged from both his son Andrew (now a golf team member at Duke University) and his daughter Caroline (graduated from Trinity School in 2007, attending Harvard University), missing major events in their lives, such as graduations, and sometimes going long stretches without talking to them, and that neither of them was taking part in his presidential campaign.[162][163] Caroline uses her mother's surname, Hanover, rather than Giuliani's, and according to reports, she did not inform Giuliani when she was accepted to Harvard.[154] Caroline apparently linked her personal Facebook page to the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate, Senator Barack Obama.[164][165] However, after a slate.com contributor reported this link, Caroline removed this link from her "Facebook" page.[166]

2008 presidential campaign logo
A draft movement began in late 2005 to get Giuliani to run for President of the United States in 2008. Throughout 2006, rumors circulated regarding a possible Giuliani campaign, abetted by hints from the former Mayor himself. In November 2006 Giuliani announced the formation of an exploratory committee. In February 2007 he filed a "statement of candidacy" and confirmed on the television program Larry King Live that he was indeed running.[168]

Early polls showed him with one of the highest levels of name recognition and support and the front-runner in the race for the Republican nomination.[169]

In Giuliani's second appearance in a major 2007 GOP debate, on May 15, conducted by Fox News, he challenged fellow candidate Representative Ron Paul, when Paul stated that the United States' military interventionist policy was a contributing factor to why America has been attacked and why there are anti-American feelings in the region. Giuliani interrupted the debate and said that Paul made "an extraordinary statement" and that "as someone who lived through the attack of September 11, that we invited the attack because we were attacking Iraq. I don't think I've heard that before, and I've heard some pretty absurd explanations for September 11th."[170]

In May 2007, the Associated Press reported that while the Log Cabin Republicans generally favor Giuliani over the other Republican candidates, some within the organization express concerns that Giuliani has spoken against civil unions.[171]

In June of 2007, a poll of New York voters revealed that a majority of New York City voters disapproved of him, while Giuliani's favorable rating among New York Republicans was 76%.[172]

As of September 2007, most polls showed Giuliani to have more support than any of the other declared Republican candidates, with only Senator Thompson and Governor Romney showing greater support in some state polls.[173] Specifically, state-by-state polls for the 2008 Republican nomination show that Giuliani polls ahead of all other candidates in a majority of states including the delegate-rich states of California [174], New York [175] and Florida[176]. Thompson shows strength in southern states such as Texas[177], North Carolina[178], South Carolina[179] (which is a key early state), Georgia[180], Tennessee[181] (which he served as U.S. Senator) and Alabama[182] (his birthplace). Romney shows strength in the key early states of Iowa[183], New Hampshire[184] and Nevada[185], and is also polling well in Michigan[186] (which may be a key early state), Utah[187] and Idaho[188].

Awards and honors
Giuliani is awarded the 2002 Ronald Reagan Freedom Award by former First Lady Nancy Reagan

In 1998, Mayor Giuliani received The Hundred Year Association of New York's Gold Medal Award "in recognition of outstanding contributions to the City of New York."[189]

For his leadership on and after September 11, Giuliani was given an honorary knighthood (KBE) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on February 13, 2002.[190]

In 2002, the Episcopal Diocese of New York gave Giuliani the Fiorello LaGuardia Public Service Award for Valor and Leadership in the Time of Global Crisis.[191]

Also in 2002, Former First Lady Nancy Reagan awarded the Mayor the Ronald Reagan Freedom Award. The award is given to "those who have made monumental and lasting contributions to the cause of freedom," and who "embody President Reagan's lifelong belief that one man or woman truly can make a difference."[192]

In 2004, construction began on the Rudolph W. Giuliani Trauma Center at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York.[193]

In 2005, Giuliani received honorary degrees from Loyola College in Maryland[194] and Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont.[citation needed] In 2007, Giuliani received an honorary Doctorate in Public Administration from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, Charleston, SC.

In 2006, Rudy and Judith Giuliani were honored by the American Heart Association at its annual Heart of the Hamptons benefit in Water Mill, New York.[195]

"Political positions of Mike Huckabee From http://www.wikipedia.com/
Huckabee opposes abortions, same-sex marriages, and civil unions

Huckabee is against gun control and is an avid hunter.

Huckabee supports the death penalty

Huckabee has expressed support for allowing creationism and intelligent design in school classes along with evolution.[49][50] However, Huckabee's position is that belief in evolution is not relevant to being President.[51][52]

Huckabee supports the War in Iraq, the troop surge and the continued operation of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.[1]

Huckabee endorsed the use of foreign workers from Canada and Mexico for agricultural labor,[53]

Huckabee opposed McCain/Kennedy immigration bill[54] and believes the United States' number one priority should be to secure America's borders.[55] He said of the border, "Police it, absolutely. Militarize it, no."[56] In an interview with CBS news Huckabee said that he intends to reach out to minorities, unions and other traditional Democratic groups. "If Republicans don't win minority votes and votes that we traditionally don't get, Hillary Clinton's the next president," Huckabee said in a teleconference with reporters while campaigning in Iowa.[57]

Huckabee supports the FairTax as a replacement for the current tax system.[58]

Health advocacy
When elected governor of Arkansas, Huckabee was significantly overweight. In 2003, physicians diagnosed the governor with adult-onset diabetes and informed him that he would not live more than ten years if he did not lose weight. Prompted by this diagnosis (as well as the subsequent death of former Governor White, whose obesity led to a fatal heart attack), Huckabee began dieting. He subsequently lost over 110 pounds,[119][120] according to a New York Times article at a pace so rapid that "it was as if he simply unzipped a fat suit and stepped out."[121]
Huckabee publicly recounted his previous burdens as an overweight man: the steps of the Arkansas capitol from the entrance of the building up to the Governor's office were so long and steep that he would be out of breath and exhausted by the time he reached the top of the stairs; he secretly feared that he would be interviewed by media at the top of the steps, and that he would be unable to respond appropriately due to his overexertion and breathlessness.[122]
Huckabee has discussed his weight loss and used health care reform as major focuses of his governorship.[123]
Drawing attention to his weight loss and new outlook, Huckabee ran in the 2006 New York City Marathon.[124]
Huckabee ran in the 2005 Marine Corps Marathon, and the 2005 and 2006 Little Rock Marathon. The 2005 Little Rock Marathon featured an impromptu challenge between Huckabee and Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack. Huckabee completed the marathon in 4:38:31, defeating Vilsack by 50 minutes.
Huckabee was one of 10 recipients of a 2006 American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Impact Award acknowledging his work as a "health crusader".

Books: Huckabee has authored or co-authored five books.
Character is the Issue (1997), a memoir (inspired by the crisis surrounding the incidents prior to his taking office as governor)
Kids Who Kill (1998), a book about juvenile violence (inspired by the Jonesboro massacre, which took place during his tenure as governor)

"News Release: Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee Responds to Wall Street Journal Column

October 26, 2007 Little Rock, AR – Presidential Candidate and Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee wrote the following letter to the editor of the Wall Street Journal in response to Friday’s column by John Fund:

To the Editor:

John Fund’s view of my ten-and-a-half-year record as governor of Arkansas and my vision for America’s future (“Another Man from Hope, Who is Mike Huckabee?”) calls for me to set the record straight. It’s important to note that every living Republican in Arkansas who has been elected to either a statewide or a federal office has endorsed my candidacy. I’m grateful for their support and proud that in 1998, I received the largest percentage of votes ever received by a Republican gubernatorial nominee in Arkansas, and that Arkansans re-elected me to another four-year term in November 2002. I am even prouder that, throughout my tenure as governor and lieutenant governor of Arkansas, I campaigned tirelessly for countless Republican candidates for the state house and federal office – and even helped get some elected. As governor, I pushed through the Arkansas Legislature the first major, broad-based tax cuts in state history — a $90 million tax relief package for Arkansas families; led efforts to establish a Property Taxpayers' Bill of Rights; and created a welfare reform program that reduced the welfare rolls in the state by almost 50 percent. We also doubled the standard deduction to $2,000 for single taxpayers and $4,000 for those who are married. In total, I led the fight to cut taxes and fees over 90 times during my ten-and-a-half years as governor, saving the people of Arkansas almost $380 million. When I left office, Arkansas had over $800 million in state surplus.

One of my proudest achievements as governor was signing legislation creating ARKids First – creating health insurance coverage for more than 70,000 Arkansas children who otherwise might have gone without. I am firmly committed to finding a way to provide health care and a better education for America’s children, who hold the key to our nation’s future. Unfortunately, there seems to be a serious misunderstanding about my SCHIP comment at a recent presidential debate. I was not criticizing President Bush’s veto as a matter of policy, but as a matter of politics. I fully believe that Bush should have negotiated a compromise and not let it get to the point of a veto. Bush indicated he was willing to spend more than the $5 billion he originally proposed, but less than the $35 billion the Democrats pushed through, so there was clearly room to negotiate. In no way do I support spending an additional $35 billion, or moving two million children from private insurance to government insurance, or letting SCHIP be a step on the path to socialized medicine. I believe that we must be good stewards of our environment and support many paths to reducing our emission of greenhouse gases, such as more nuclear power and alternative sources of clean energy. As part of our overall effort, I also support a cap and trade system, which has worked well for reduction of sulphur dioxide emissions. However, I do not agree with those who want all allowances to be auctioned off because I believe that will create too great a burden on businesses. The alternative to cap and trade is a carbon tax, which I don’t support.

It is difficult to fully understand the institutional challenges of a Republican running for office in Arkansas. In 1993, when I was elected lieutenant governor, I was the fourth Republican to be elected to statewide office since Reconstruction. Students of Arkansas politics should talk to former U.S. Senator Tim Hutchinson, U.S. Rep. John Boozman or former Rep. Jay Dickey, all of whom support my candidacy for president, but none of whom is cited in Fund’s column, about these challenges.

Nevertheless, running for election and re-election, and more importantly, governing in an overwhelmingly Democratic state, prepared me to climb that next mountain: running for president and leading America with an optimistic vision and solid plans to successfully confront the complex challenges we face today. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Mike Huckabee, Presidential Candidate, Former Governor of Arkansas (1996-2007)"

The Freedom Of Choice Act = TERROR!!!!!!!!

Brothers and Sisters,

The Freedom of Choice Act is a abomination from hell. It is the brain child of our liberal 110th congress. Their back lash to the pro-life victories we have had is so vicious and hideous that it is sickening to even talk about it. The Liberals of the 110th Congress seem to have an incredibly callous disregard for life, a total disregard for the child growing in the womb and an insatiable desire to murder the unborn. They are oblivious to the Commandment which states: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Instead these Liberals are hell-bent on making it legal to kill a child at any and every stage of pregnancy. The "milk of human kindness" evidently was the missing ingredient in their childhoods.

If the Freedom of Choice Act is passed it would wipe out every pro-life gain we have made since Roe v Wade became law. It would overturn the Ban on Partial Birth Abortion that the Supreme Court upheld in April 2007 -- earlier this year. If passed this bill would eliminate any recourse in the courts and put an end to future legislation to amend or rescind this law. The Freedom of Choice Act would guarantee the right of every woman to have an abortion up to and including the 9th month of pregnancy, right up to delivery. It would, in effect, add the Right to Abortion to our Bill of Rights. Rather than abortion on demand, we would have abortion on request. This bill also guarantees that abortions would be paid for with our tax dollars. It bars our government from restricting funding for abortions.

It's hard to believe that liberals would dare to propose such a wicked bill when more than 70% of our population is against abortion. The liberals are ignoring the fact that Americans are Pro-life. The 70% of us who are pro-life had better stand up and speak up and pray up so this bill never becomes law in America. The Freedom of Choice Act is unbridled brutality against unborn children and it must be killed before it sees the light of day. We cannot let this bill ever be made into law. If this bill were ever actually to become the law of our land, I believe our fate would be sealed and God's mighty hand of judgment would swiftly descend upon us. We who know right from wrong must act swiftly and in unity.

What can you do????
Pray that this bill never becomes law. Set the Blood of Jesus against this bill. Ask God to smite this bill.
Call your Representative and implore him/her to vote against this bill 1.202.224.3121.
Call the Center for Moral Clarity at 1.800.942.1974 to be added to a petition against this bill. You will not be asked for a donation if you press the right menu number.
Tell your friends about this issue and urge them to make the same phone calls you did.

Many blessings to you as you take responsibility for restraining wickedness in our land.
Shalom to all~~~

40 DAYS FOR LIFE: DAY 32

"OCTOBER 27Daily Devotional by: Fr. Frank Pavone***********

INTENTION: Pray that people of faith will have their strength renewed even in the face of the violence of abortion.
SCRIPTURE: "The favors of the Lord are not exhausted, his mercies are not spent. They are renewed each morning, so great is his faithfulness. I say to myself, 'The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.' The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait in silence for the saving help of the LORD." -- Lamentations 3:22-26
REFLECTION: In the Book of Lamentations, Jeremiah laments over the destruction that has come upon Jerusalem and all God's people because of the invasion of the Babylonians. He had warned the people of that invasion and of their ensuing exile. He told them it was going to happen, neither because of military blunders or political miscalculations or economic woes. The problem, instead, was spiritual. God's people were being unfaithful to the covenant. Scripture tells us that one of the ways the Israelites were unfaithful to the covenant was that they sacrificed their sons and daughters to demons in the fire (see Ps. 106:37-38; 2Kgs. 17:17-18; 24:3-4). Therefore, the Babylonians were being used by God as ani nstrument of his punishment. Jeremiah was considered a traitor because of prophesying in this way. Yet he was proven right. The Babylonians carried God's people into exile, and burned the holy city Jerusalem. This was like the end of the world! This was, after all, God's dwelling on earth, the Promised Land that God had given to his people! How could the enemy triumph in this way? The Book of Lamentations, a short book of only five chapters, contains some of the most poignant expressions of human grief. These verses are used in many Churches on Good Friday, since they can be seen to express a prophecy of the suffering of the Lord and the lamentation of his followers on that dark day. But in the midst of his grief, Jeremiah writes the verses quoted above. "The favors of the Lord are not exhausted..." It is a call to hope that no matter how much violence there is, life will prevail in the end. Why does he say, however, that God's mercies are renewed each morning? Because early in the morning, on the first day of the week, the women came to the tomb -- and they found that the events of that morning changed everything. Christ's victory over death came in the morning, and therefore each day we can renew our confidence that life has the final victory.
PRAYER: Lord, look kindly on your people who weep and mourn amidst the vast devastation that abortion has brought upon our land. We cannot even count the children killed, and the mothers and fathers wounded. We cannot measure the devastation and corruption abortion has brought upon the very fabric of our society. But we declare today that your favors have not been exhausted, your mercies have not been spent. They are renewed each morning. Give us new strength today in the resurrection of Christ your Son, that we may bear effective witness to the victory of life! In His name we pray, AMEN

INTENTION: Pray that God's people may understand deeply, and live effectively, the truth that love leads to life, and leads us to offer our lives for one another.
SCRIPTURE: "Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." -- 1 Jn.4:7-10
REFLECTION: The basis of Christianity is the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Christians rejoice in the Resurrection, because it is the victory of life not only for Christ but for each person who believes in Him. Christ's rising from the grave means that we too will rise from the grave! The victory of life is also the victory of love. From the first page of Scripture to the last, it is clear that love leads to life. These two realities cannot be separated, because they are rooted in the one God, who cannot be divided. Scripture tells us that God is love (1 Jn. 4:8). Scripture also tells us that God is life (see Jn.14:6). Love and life always go together. We see this in creation. Where were you 100 years ago today? You were nowhere; you did not exist. So why are you here today? How were you rescued from that nothingness you were once in? Certainly you did not ask to be born. You weren't there to do the asking. Certainly you did not earn it because you weren't thereto do anything that could earn it. What accounts for the fact that you are here? We can say that your parents came together and you were conceived and born, and that is true. But that doesn't fully answer the question of why you are here. When your parents came together, there could have been millions of possible people conceived and born, who would have been your brothers or sisters. I t didn't have to be you! The only ultimate explanation of why you are here is that God loves you. He chose you to be! In fact, at each moment He is literally loving you into existence. If He stopped loving you for one instant, you would fall back into the nothingness you were in 100 yearsago. Love leads to life. This is clear also in the mystery of salvation. St. John tells us, "This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his only Son into the world that we might have life through him" (1 Jn 4:9). Christ's love for us brought Him to the cross, and this led to the victory of life. The cross is the best symbol of love. Love is self-giving for the good of another person. Christ gives His life for us, without complaining and without counting the cost. His concern is that we might have life. Having shown His love for us in this way, He instructs us, "Love one another as I have loved you" (Jn. 15:12). He does not say, "Love one another in whatever way you want," but rather, "as I have loved you." We are called to love in a way that brings forth new life. We are called to give ourselves, without counting the cost, that others may live.
PRAYER: God of love and life, we see your love manifest in the sacrifice your Son made for our sins. Fix our eyes on this proof of your love; fill our hearts with its lessons for our lives. Teach your people, day after day and choice after choice, that love always leads to life. Give us that greatest love that anyone can have, to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters, especially those who are most vulnerable. We pray in Jesus' Name, AMEN

40 DAYS FOR LIFE: DAY 31

************************************************************************************
"OCTOBER 26 Daily Devotional by: Carmen Pate

INTENTION: Pray that the post-abortive women and men who have experienced God's healing and restoration will seek opportunities to serve others with the same compassion they have been shown through Christ.
SCRIPTURE: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God."-- 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
REFLECTION: Can you just imagine the impact the church might have on America if we were to apply the instruction in this passage to our daily lives? I believe we are seeing asurge of post-abortive women and men, healed by God's grace, coming out of the church pews and going into the service of Jehovah Rophe, our Healer. Post-abortive women and men are on the front lines of the 40 Days for Life campaign. They are volunteering at local pregnancy care centers. Some are hosting website blogs, while others are contributing their stories. Some are writing articles or books. Still others are teaching Post-Abortive Bible studies or speaking at conferences for healing. Some are standing in the gap for victims of abortion by spreading the truth on college campuses and in the halls of Congress. Some are providing a listening ear and weeping with a friend who has "been there too". Pastor and author Bruce Wilkerson inspired me to service when he said, "Your Father knows your gifts, your hindrances, and the condition you are in at every moment. And He also knows something you can't possibly know -- every single person who is in desperate need of receiving His touch through you." I have found from personal experience that when I prayf or God to bring people in my life that need His healing hand, so I may be used to love and minister to them, He always answers my prayer! And I am never surprised that He brings those who are suffering in ways that I have suffered so I might empathize and offer the same Hope and healing that I received in Christ Jesus. What a mighty God we serve!
PRAYER: Dear God of all Comfort, We praise You for Your hand of Providence over our lives that opens doors of opportunity for us to be healed in our time of affliction, and then opens doors of opportunity for us to comfort others. May we be ever mindful of those who are in desperate need of receiving Your touch through us, and may we be obedient to Your calling in reaching out to them withYour love. Thank you Lord for deeming us worthy forYour service. Because of Christ and in His Name we pray, AMEN.

ENDA Coming To A Vote In The Next Few Days

The Liberty Council warns us that the liberal leadership in Congress planning to move the Employment Non Discrimination Act (ENDA) to the floor for a vote possibly in the next 48 hours. They are planning to give little or no formal notice before the floor vote.

The Christian Community needs to respond vigorously to stop this dangerous bill from becoming law.

Liberty Council reports that homosexual rights activists have launched a major grassroots effort to pressure the House into passing this bill. They are also working to further expand the "gender identity" language which would make this bill even worse for Christians.

Your calls to your Representative and key House leaders are needed today! Please take a moment and call the House Switchboard: 1.202.224.3121. Ask to speak to your Representative. If you don't know who your Representative is give the operator your zip code and the operator will tell you who your Representative is and connect you to your Representative's office.

Liberty Council's Talking points:
1. I oppose ENDA (H.R. 3685) and urge you to do the same.
2. ENDA wrongly creates a new legally protected class based on "sexual orientation" and/or "gender identity." Sexual orientation and/or gender identity can change and should not be protected by law.
3. ENDA will force employees and employers to embrace or promote values that may violate their own religious or personal convictions.
4. ENDA does not include enough protections for religious organizations.

Liberty Council states that ENDA presents a serious threat to the rights of Christians by elevating "sexual orientation" to a protected status. This puts our Christian faith at odds with the law. Schools, daycare centers, Christian non-profits, churches and Christian-owned businesses could be forced to hire homosexuals and adopt policies that support the homosexual agenda.

Liberty Council says it is possible that ENDA's supporters will pull the bill back, but we must be ready. Even if you have contacted your Representative on this issue in the past, please contact them again and tell others to do the same.

Mathew Staver of Liberty Council and I thank you for taking a stand to defend our liberties.

Our National Debt: Are We Becoming a Global Credit Risk?

I received this email from Intercessors for America. It is a very sobering, thought provoking and prayer provoking reminder of one of the forces that is at work threatening our national sovereignty and our very existence. Please read and pray for America!

(I have found that IFA has many incredibly relevant articles about the pressing issues we face as a nation. Please visit that site at least once a week!)

"GOING TO WAR IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN ON BORROWED MONEY IS THE U.S. BECOMING A GLOBAL CREDIT RISK?

The Iraq-Afghanistan war is costing the U.S. $12 billion a month." . . . sound national finances have proved to be indispensable to the country's military strength" and long-term national security.

America's long tradition of war financing began with Alexander Hamilton: In January 1790, Hamilton, by then the country's Treasury secretary, confronted the American people with a stark fact: the nation had run up a huge debt fighting the Revolutionary War. This debt, he wrote, was the 'price of liberty,' and the new government had to repay it. At the writing of the Constitution the Founders were concerned about debt incurred to finance the Revolutionary War, and it was their intention to promptly pay it off. Alexander Hamilton (federalist paper #7) called for the "extinguishment of all debt." Thomas Jefferson later wrote, "I place economy among the first and most important of republican virtues, and public debt as the greatest of dangers to be feared." Hamilton's principles have kept America's credit strong through every war since the Revolution . . . until the Iraq War. Since then, "although U.S. leaders have warned that the war against terrorism could last for decades, the country lacks a multi-decade financial strategy to address the challenge." (Econ browser image) Iraq tossed the lessons of history out the window. "The country is pursuing a pre-9/11 fiscal policy in a post-9/11 world." Robert Hormats, (vice chairman of Goldman Sachs, author of the book, "The Price of Liberty: Paying for America's Wars") says that despite the oft-repeated remark that 9/11 "changed everything, in the area of fiscal policy, however, it changed nothing. The country is pursuing a pre-9/11 fiscal policy in a post-9/11 world." That assessment comes from someone who worked inside Washington for over a decade before joining Goldman Sachs in the 1980s.

This week, we had a new estimate that the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq ultimately may cost the American taxpayer a whopping $2.7 trillion, all of it added onto a national debt that already tops $9 trillion. (Salt Lake Tribune, 10/25/07)

The truth is, America desperately needs a new "Hamilton" who understands that in calculating "the price of liberty," not only do deficits matter. Americans must have a plan to repay our debts . . . if we want a strong credit rating that insures our national security for future generations.

WHO OWNS THE U.S. NATIONAL DEBT?
As of June 2007, the biggest holder of Treasury debt was the U.S. government itself, with about 52 percent of the total $8.5 trillion in paper that's out there. (Now $9 Trillion) That's leaves a little over $4 trillion in public hands. The biggest chunk (about 25 percent of the $8.5 trillion total) is held by foreign governments. (MSNBC, Grandfather Economic Report, FederalBudget.com, ZFacts.com, NationalPriorities.org, Marketwatch.com)

The United States national debt is owned by:
Japan - $644 billion
China - $350 billion
United Kingdom - $239 billion
Oil exporting countries - $100 billion
U.S. state and local governments - $467 billion
Individual investors, including brokers - $423 billion
Public and private pension funds - $319 billion
Mutual funds - $243 billion
Holders of US savings bonds - $206 billion
Insurance companies - $166 billion
Banks and credit unions - $117 billion

Day 33 of 40 Days for Life

Please pray without ceasing regarding this issue. Pray against the "Freedom of Choice Act" and below.

"40 DAYS FOR LIFE: DAY 33, OCTOBER 28
Daily Devotional by: Fr. Frank Pavone

INTENTION: Pray that we will have faith to realize that even now our Lord can bring an end to abortion.
SCRIPTURE: "On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home. 'Lord, 'Martha said to Jesus, 'if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.' Jesus said to her, 'Your brother will rise again.' Martha answered, 'I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.' Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.'"-- John 11:17-26
REFLECTION: Imagine going to a wake service for a deceased friend and having someone say to you, "If you had been here sooner, your friend would never have died!" One does not dare say such a thing unless one believes that the person being addressed has the power over life and death. In this case, of course, Martha was right. Jesus is Lord of life and death. She knew that, which is why she was able to make this statement, yet at the same time she had to wrestle with the fact that Lazarus died anyway. Jesus indeed is Lord over life and death, but here the power of death was still displayed right infront of her. Yet in this clash between the conviction of faith and the evidence of human experience, Martha allowed hope to shine through. "Even now, God will give you whatever you ask." Even now. Those words show the power of hope, born of faith. Even now, when death has already done its work, life can be victorious. Even now, when nobody expects to see Lazarus again, the blessed expectation of seeing him can arise out of the dust. Even now, when the last word seems to have been spoken, we can hope that a word will be spoken again to restore life. Even now, when Lazarus has already been laid in the tomb and it seems impossible to do anything about it, things can change. And things did change. The Lord raised Lazarus from the dead. We live in a society where many believe the abortion issue has been settled, and its practice so deeply ingrained in our policies and attitudes that it is unrealistic to think we can stop it. Yet we are the people who say to Jesus, "Even now..." Even after tens of millions of aborted children and wounded mothers and fathers, even after multiple reaffirmations of Roe vs. Wade by the courts, even after decades of slow and frustrating efforts to stop the killing, even now the evil of abortion can bestopped.
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, even now, you are master of life and death. I come before you as Martha did after Lazarus had died. I come before you after countless brothers and sisters of mine have died from abortion. And I pray to you: even now, you can stop the forces of death. Even now, you can bring us into a culture of life. Come, Lord Jesus. Speak your word yet again, and free our nation from the shackles of death, for you live and reign forever and ever. AMEN.

Day 28 40 Days for Life

"40 DAYS FOR LIFE: DAY 28, OCTOBER 23
Daily Devotional by: Carmen Pate
*******************************************************
INTENTION: Pray that we will each submit ourselves this day as a living sacrifice to God, giving all that we have in us for those being sacrificed on the altar of convenience.
SCRIPTURE: "I beseech you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service." Romans 12:1
REFLECTION: The Apostle Paul's words refer back to the last refrain of his doxology of praise in Romans 11:36 which says, "For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen. "Since all things are for His glory, we are to offer ourselves for that purpose. This of course is in sharp contrast to those who are being swayed by the enemy to sacrifice their babies on the altar of convenience, rather than choosing to surrender their all, including their unborn child, to the Lord for His purposes. A career, education goals, or even a boyfriend can unknowingly become an idol for some young women. In their minds, abortion is a convenient way to "rid themselves" of an obstacle in the way of their "worship." Under the Old Covenant, God accepted the sacrifices of dead animals as a form of worship. But sacrifices to idols were forbidden and sacrifices of children then and now are an abomination to the Lord. Because of Christ's ultimate sacrifice, the Old Testament sacrifices are no longer of any effect(Hebrews 9:11-12). For those now in Christ, the only acceptable sacrifice for worship is to offer one self completely to the Lord, as instruments of righteousness. In light of the sacrifice Christ made on our behalf, and the fruit of God's mercies on our lives, we owe God our highest form of praise and worship. Presenting our bodies as living sacrifices is therefore reasonable service. We were made to worship God and God alone. The enemy who seeks worship for himself distorts God's truth regarding worship, sacrifice, idols, and children. As you have given of yourself to rescue those who are perishing -- the young woman and her child -- you are worshiping God in the truest sense of the word. May your example lead an abortion minded client to turn from her idols to worship the one true God, sparing her child from the altar of convenience, and sparing herself from a lifetime of regret.
PRAYER: God Almighty, You alone are worthy of our praise and worship. Having accepted Your Son's sacrifice on my behalf, I in turn present my body to you as a living sacrifice. Thank you for deeming me holy and acceptable because of Christ's shed blood for me. I pray that you would use me as your vessel to rescue others who are perishing. Through Christ who is Our Glory, AMEN.

Que Passa, Amigo? Can I Drive A Car?????

Elliot Spitzer has come out with some astounding policies: Gay Marriage; Unlimited, legally unchallengeable Abortion up to 9 months gestation; and now Drivers Licenses for Illegals. Isn't there a three strikes you're out rule??? Oh, that's right. It's in baseball.

On an up note, Governor Davis of California also wanted to give Illegals drivers licenses. The good people of California created such an uproar that the bill did not pass and Governor Davis was removed from office. Will history repeat itself in New York???? I wonder.

While we were on vacation, we were driving in the car late at night (don't ask, we had a few crazy days) and could only find a limited number of radio stations we could pick up in the Massachusetts mountains. WGY, 810 AM, was one of the stations we could get. There are some really great talk radio programs on at night on WGY. Rolly someone or other has a terrific program on from 10:00 PM to 12:00 Midnight. The topic of the night was on Governor Spitzer's desire to give illegal immigrants driver's licenses. There are many, many reasons that we shouldn't do that but I'll just highlight a few.
1. These people are in our country illegally. We should not reward illegal behavior by giving them the right to drive.
2. A driver's license not only gives the owner the right to drive, but also bestowes on them certain rights and privileges that a citizen enjoys.
3. Border checks of those without a valid driver's license allows a search to be made of the car. These searches have revealed weapons and drugs according to the Buffalo, NY police. If Illegals who are smuggling weapons or drugs have driver's licenses, they can not be legally searched. Although, I know I have been asked to open my trunk and have had some bags searched in the past when coming back from Canada to the U.S. in the past. I didn't know it was illegal for them to do that. Canada has never checked anything of mine.
4. If NY begins giving Illegals driver's licenses, they will flock to New York and will increase crowding in our schools, increase the costs of education our children, and increase school taxes to pay for the increased enrollment. They will not add a whole lot of money to our tax base. We will have increased welfare costs and increased medical costs.
5. The argument that we will know where they are, does not ameliorate the increased problems we will have. Not all will apply for a driver's license, so that is not the best way to find out where they are. The best way is to secure our borders, give Legals green cards or equivalent ID, have them become citizens, speak English and have social security cards. Big business is a problem as always, because they like to pay Illegals less money and keep them secret. Prosecuting big businesses that hire Illegals is always a good idea.
6. Because we have aborted so many citizens, we do not have a sufficient labor force and that is what dives the lack of interest in enforcing the existing laws and having a rational policy on immigration. If we need more workers, lets have them come into the country in a legal orderly way and process them adequately as was done to European Immigrants at Ellis Island.
7. I have heard an irrational argument that the Mexicans who enter the country illegally are analogous to the Pilgrims. How ludicrous. There was no organized, centralized Government in existence when the Pilgrims came over. We now have a thriving, society with a centralized Government.

One suggestion presented was to create a document of less value than an actual drivers license -- a document that would not be able to be used for identification or bestow any legal rights to the holder other that the permission to drive a car on U.S. streets. I may not see the pitfalls to this plan. It struck me as a possible cure to the problem Illegals have -- getting transportation to their job. I don't know all the answers to the problem, but I think giving Illegals a valid NY Driver's License is a very big mistake.

Please call Governor Spitzer's office, 518.474.8390, and tell them what you think. Also call your local Representatives, 518.455.4100. and Senators, 518.455.2800, and tell them what you think.

Blessings to All~~~

I'm Back, Day 21 of 40 Days of Prayer

We had a wonderful vacation in the Massachusetts Berkshires. We feel energized and over due to be back on the blog. Our computer was not working well for about a week so it was impossible to get online and write. Everything is fine now, praise God. I think the angels fixed it. Again, praise God!!!!

The 40 Days of Prayer against abortion is going well. I hope you have signed up to get the emails yourself. Today's entry is quite lengthy but it explains putting on the full armor of God which is extremely important for us to have on when ever we pray about spiritual/political matters. The blood of Jesus and the Full Armor of God are our protective coverings and we should put them on every day and put them on our children and grandchildren too. Here is today's entry.

"40 DAYS FOR LIFE: DAY 21, OCTOBER 16
Daily Devotional by: Carmen Pate

INTENTION: Pray that we each will daily put on the full armor of God, so that we are strong in the Lord and the power of His might.

SCRIPTURE: "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day and having done all, to stand." -- Ephesians 6:12-13

REFLECTION: I am confounded to see how the battle over the issue of life is perceived more often in churches today as political rather than spiritual. Ironically, the enemy has used this twisted perception to silence many in the body of Christ. We must see the battle for what it is and if we are to be prepared to face the spiritual enemy on the issue of abortion, we must daily "put on" the armor God has given us. Let's consider what the full armor entails:

1) Girding your waist with the Belt of Truth (vs. 14) -- The waist was generally thought to be the seat of emotions. To gird this area with truth is to commit your emotions to believe truth and to speak truth, regardless of the repercussions.

2) Putting on the Breastplate of Righteousness (vs. 14) -- The righteousness of Christ is glorious armor for us to wear in a world of sin. Satan has already assailed the righteousness of Christ with all the resources at his disposal and found it impenetrable. It will protect our hearts -- the innermost springs of our beings -- from all unrighteousness so evident in this fallen world.

3) Shod your feet with the preparation of the Gospel of Peace. (vs. 15) -- The Christian is to be about the Father's business, that of sharing the Good News of Christ, which brings peace and reconciliation. Preparation is vital if we are to be effective in God's work.

4) Taking the Shield of Faith (vs.16) -- The Accuser of the brethren will send his fiery darts to instill doubt, fear, and guilt. Faith acts as an invisible shield that deflects such false accusations.

5) Taking the Helmet of Salvation (vs.17) -- A helmet protects the head, the brain and in turn our mind and thoughts. God's salvation must encompass what we think. Satan hopes we will set aside divine revelation for human reasoning. He would like for us to be mistaken about the plan of salvation and the daily practice of Christianity.

6) Taking the Sword of the Spirit (vs.17) -- The Word of God, the only offensive weapon in this armor, was used by the Lord Jesus against Satan. The living Word is powerful and effective. Our armor is complete. We are ready to wage war, and the next verse tells us how, "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit." (vs.18)

PRAYER: Dear Lord, as you lead us into the spiritual battle of abortion may we be reminded that the battle is truly Yours. We thank you for equipping us with Your armor. Lead us daily to put it on! Thank you for allowing us to serve under your command, and for hearing our requests for direction and protection. Thank you for the victory that is ours because of Your Son Jesus. In Jesus' Name, AMEN.

Pressing On With the Full Armor,
David Bereit
